Laverne T. “Vern” Killion, age 78, of Palmyra, MO, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 30, 2020, at 9:05 pm in Blessing Hospital.

Vern was born March 19, 1941 in his family home in Oconto, NE, a son of William Paul and Erma E. Worcester Killion. He married Susan Kirkton on May 21, 1977 In Shenandoah, TX. She survives.

Vern attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he studied electrical engineering. While in school, Vern became an avid Husker fan, and he traveled with the team as a broadcast engineer during the Bob Devaney era.

In 1970 Vern went to work for Gates/Harris Corp as a support engineer. In 1975, he transferred to Houston, TX where he became involved in television broadcast sales for Harris Corp. He left Harris in 1981 and took a position with Andrew Corp. selling broadcast antennas. He then returned to Nebraska in 1986 as the Director of Engineering for the Nebraska Rural Radio Association. He held that position until his retirement in 2007.

Vern was an avid Ham Radio enthusiast. He was involved in weekly and daily scheds (meetings) to communicate with his fellow ham friends. Most recently, Vern spent his Tuesday mornings enjoying coffee at Panera and reconnecting and reminiscing with his former co-workers and broadcast buddies.

Vern especially liked traveling on cruises and taking camping trips with family and friends. He was able to enjoy international travels during his career with Gates-Harris and Andrew Corporation.

Vern loved telling jokes and playing pranks. He was quite the prankster.

Vern always had a camera with him, and he was the family photographer. He especially enjoyed taking embarrassing pictures during family dinners.

Vern loved his cars and trucks. Through the years he had a Studebaker Golden Hawk, a ’56 Chevy, a ’77 T-Bird, and several Jeep Wranglers and Cherokees. He also owned a Corvette, a BMW 325i convertible, and several GM cars and trucks.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Killion of Palmyra, MO; two children: Lane (Dana) Killion of Yorba Linda, CA; and Holly (Herb York) Killion of Healdsburg, CA; five grandchildren: Brandon Killion of Fountain Valley, CA; Logan and Hayley Killion of Yorba Linda; and Lucas and Wyatt York of Healdsburg, CA; several nieces and nephews including Mark (Mary) Killion of Omaha, NE, who was a very close friend to Vern; a step daughter, Kay Peters of Quincy; four step grandchildren: D.J. (Sierra) Peters of Palmyra, MO; Bethany (Antonio Aducci) Peters; and Noble and Landon Peters, all of Quincy; and five step great grandchildren: Fox, Keen, and Dash Peters; and Andi and Sidney Aducci.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Paul Jr. and Marvin Killion; and a step great granddaughter, Madelyn Peters.

Services: a celebration of Vern’s life will be held at a later date in March.
