Thomas G. Schmidt, 87, of Grand Island died Friday, Aug. 28, 2015.

Per Tom’s wishes, he will be cremated. There will be no services; a private family gathering will take place a later date. Apfel Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Tom was born March 10, 1928, south of Hildreth on the family farm to George Thomas and Minnie (Detlefs) Schmidt. He was later baptized in the Lutheran faith.

Those left to cherish his memory include sons, Larry E. Schmidt and Donnell L. Schmidt; and a daughter, Terri Sue Wagner, all of Grand Island; a granddaughter, Jennifer (Shafer) Ehlers of St. Paul; one sister, Bernice Ross of Central City; nieces, nephews and cousins; a special friend, Brenda Schanou of Grand Island; a longtime friend, Connie Patton of Grand Island; and his cherished dog, Lester.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Randall Joe Schmidt.

Tom grew up on the family farm south of Hildreth until age 10. After a fire and his father having a heart attack the family moved to Grand Island. Tom started working at age 14 for Red Rooster Auto Parts, then becoming a truck driver and a television repairman for Swanson TV, working for Nebraska Public Power Systems doing telecommunications, and then farming at Upland until his retirement.

Tom was married to Shirley Elaine Bentley from Shelton in October 1951.

Tom was a self-taught individual, fixing radios as a young age, which gave him the skills for electronics, which evolved into the love of his life for 50 years being a ham radio Operator, call letters KGZD, and building his own radios and computers. Tom also enjoyed taking his air boat to the river and catching catfish.
